Community Book Swap & Donation Drive

benefitting the International Community School

Summer is a season for reading, but not every child's family has enough money to provide them with books.  This book swap & donation drive will allow people with more books than they know what to do with to directly help out their neighbors who need books!

We will be swapping books 2 for 1.  You bring 2 books, you take 1 book in return.  The extra books will be donated to the International Community School (with any they can't use going to the DeKalb Public Library).

SCHEDULE:

1p - 2p:  Donation Drop-Off only.  If you want to donate books but don't want to swap for new books, you can drop the off during this period before the event starts.  You can drive up and drop off at the front of the school!

2p - 3p:  Drop-Off for Swap opens.  Bring your books and receive 1 ticket for every 2 books you bring to swap. During this period, we will be accepting books and organizing them for the swap (which will start at 3p). [See FAQs below about what kinds of books you can swap.]

While you wait for the swap to begin, you can get documents securely shredded on-site (just drive through - suggested donation of $5/box which goes to the school), enjoy a delicious pop from the King of Pops ($1 from each pop sale goes to the school), and meet your neighbors! [Get more details about the shredding event.]

3p - 5p:  Drop & Swap.  Starting at 3p you can peruse the books and redeem your swap tickets.  We will continue accepting books for the event and swapping through 5p, but please come early (and if possible drop off your books by 2p) for the best selection!

FAQS:

What kinds of books can I swap?

For children's books, you can bring and swap any type of book:  fiction, non-fiction, reference books, etc.  For non-children's books (adult and young adult), we are only swapping fiction although you can drop-off any type of book for donation.

How many books can I bring?

Bring as many books as you like.  You can choose 1 book for every 2 books you bring (and you're welcome to donate books straight out if you don't want to choose any books to take home.  All left-over books appropriate to use by the International Community School will be donated to the school and all remaining books will be donated to the Toco Hills branch of the DeKalb Public Library.  The library holds a book sale each year to raise funds.

What can I do between dropping off books and waiting for the swap?

We are hoping for a neighborhood picnic/meet-and-greet atmosphere.  The King of Pops will be on hand starting at 2:00p.  Feel free to bring a blanket and relax on the lawn in front of the school.  Meet your neighbors.  Bring a box (or many boxes) of documents for the secure shredding event -- you can drive right up, drop your boxes off, and then park for the book swap.  We have more activities in the works as well, please check back for more details.

What is the International Community School?

The International Community School ("ICS") is a public charter elementary school located in the former Medlock Elementary School in North Decatur (30033).  ICS is a culturally diverse school with half of the student population coming from immigrant and refugee families throughout DeKalb county and the other half coming from native-born American kids from the surrounding neighborhoods.
